Biography
Primary 1 is an apt name for Joe Flory, a lone polymatic musician, producer and singer who straddles an impressive range of styles.
Armed with a wicked sense of humour and an encyclopedic knowledge of movies, his music is chocka full of stop-start melodies, bouncy synths, urgent stream-of-consciousness vocals and even the odd brass section. Put simply, here is an artist making some of the most arresting and innovative pop music around.
Welcome to the charismatic world of Primary 1.Though previous associations with Erol Alkan and Riton could perhaps align Primary 1 in the electro scene, it’d be a short-sighted conclusion for an artist making music so eloquently diverse that a waltz through his forthcoming debut album is akin to fast-forwarding through Bowie’s entire career - if he’d taken Andre 3000 and Daft Punk to Berlin instead of Iggy.
In April this year The Blues featuring Nina Perrson was released as a limited edition 10’’ for Record Store Day. It was Rough Trade East’s best selling release. Now Primary 1 is set to release his first solus single effort Princess. Dropping on July 5th the accompanying video was directed by Radical Friend (Yeasayer O.N.E and Ambling Alp).
The single is taken from the forthcoming album Other People slated for a late summer release on Atlantic Records this year. Collaborations on the long player include the mysterious Harry Tuttle (who could be from one of Joe's favourite bands) and Paul Epworth. Other People was co produced in Sweden with Smile (Jocke from Teddybears and Bjorn from Peter Bjorn and John) and is mixed in part by Philippe Zdar (producer of the recent Grammy Award winning Phoenix album)
Primary 1 supported Ellie Goulding on her sold out UK tour in March and is confirmed to play at this year’s Glastonbury, Lovebox and Big Chill festivals.
